The Measurement of Pain

You can measure pain based on a simple scale:
How much does this hurt you?

Remember the time I was flying
High above the jungle-gym beams
Away from the arms of safety and
Falling into infinity?
It hurt.

Remember the time I was trampled
By a rouge horse? It was my fault.
I had never learned to let go in time
Or ever really at all.
It hurt more.

Remember the time I stopped too soon
Paused at the red light, lost in a
Beautiful daydream I can’t remember
Before the blinding light and crushing metal?
It hurt even more.

Remember the time I stood there, watching
As you pulled out of your driveway,
Leading her to salvation and leaving me
Standing in your memories?
It hurt the most.
