Eyes

You have hypnotic eyes,
He said to me, unabashed.
I paused; why?
These eyes are so much more
Than a pretty colour.

These are the eyes
That shed tears like bad memories
And sour regrets
When they watched him leave.

These are the eyes
That stung bitterly with cigarette smoke
And bad decisions
When the nights turned cold.

These are the eyes
That widened with mad comprehension
When they watched lips that formed words
That changed my life forever.

These are the eyes
That saw horrors and grief
And ran wild with fear
Because they understood.

These are the eyes
That someone else once called hypnotic
But I guess they didn’t work;
They couldn’t make him stay.
